She dabbed the brush in the red paint. Villy (pronounced vill-ee) lifted the brush to the canvas and effected a stroke. Immediately, she thought that the red was too bright, so she mixed it with some brown and the resulting mixture was a much darker red. The brush rose to the canvas again and she began to paint the sun. She wanted the base col[u]r of the sun to be quite rouge and the red that she had chosen was not going to fail her. She put down the brush and picked up a different brush. This brush, she dabbed it in the orange.

He looked up at the sky as if to say, ‘thank you.’ It was how he started everyday – with gratitude. Ricando (pronounced ree-can-doh) was not quite sure when it began, but for as long as he could remember, when he would immerse from the hypnopompic state, he would directly look into the sky and give thanks. He found the outside to be much more comforting than the inside. It wasn’t that he didn’t like being inside, but he just didn’t see a reason to be inside when there was so much happening outside. Outside there were trees. Outside there were birds. Outside there were cats. Outside there were dogs. Outside there were flowers. Outside there was sky. Outside there was grass. Outside – had everything anyone could ever possibly want or need.

Ricinowinia (pronounced rih-sin-oh-ween-ya) was sitting down near the lake that she usually would find herself at on most days. On this particular day, she noticed a frog, or at least, what she thought to be a frog. There was something about frogs that just made her smile with delight. She understood that many people from before her time, when her grandparents used to be alive, had some sort of distaste for frogs. She also understood that this was as a result of the ways in which people observed other people in the culture behave around creatures like frogs, especially their parents.
