Joy, Joy, Joy. It was the only thing that he really liked to engage in – things that made him joyful. It wasn’t that he didn’t enjoy the other emotions, but when there was joy, he was a happy person. The joy that he felt could be felt for miles and miles away. His pleasant disposition oozed into the air and onto the living things around him. It was almost as if he was intentionally trying to positively infect the world around him with his passion. Little did Rondalin (pronounced ron-dahl-in) know how much this would come into play later in his life.
One day as Rondalin was strolling down his normal route, he noticed there was a large group of people that seemed to be congregating around each other. He wasn’t sure what it was all about, so he began to approach the mass of people. When he did this, someone from the group broke off and began walking towards him in kind. The person met Rondalin before he got to the group and started talking to him about what was happening. The man told Rondalin about the problems that the community had been having. According to this man, it seemed that there was some sort of fog that was starting to settle over the group and this was causing them trouble in terms of being able to see where they were going. The group was to begin heading in a new direction today, but with the fog settling in and getting thicker, they were going to have a very hard time seeing where they were going.
As Rondalin listened to the man recount the issues that faced the community, he wondered how he was going to play a part in all of this. He normally didn’t see herds of people on his daily strolls, but today, this day, he did. He was curious as to why it was happening like this. Why was it him that met this group first and what was this massive fog about? The man finished explaining to Rondalin what had happened in the past when things like this occurred and then walked back to the group. He allowed Rondalin some space to think about what he said.
Rondalin didn’t really know what to think. He saw this tribe of people and wanted to help them. Rondalin was a very kind and loving person and he wanted nothing more than to be of service to himself and others – this was a perfect chance to do just that – except he wasn’t completely sure what he was meant to do. He looked out into the fog as it began to settle in heavier and heavier. It was getting to the point where he almost was unable to see the group of people anymore because the fog was so heavy. A few minutes more and he knew that it would be hard for him to even see his hand in front of his face!
He started contemplating this problem of the fog and what it meant to these people. He knew that if this fog didn’t clear, they weren’t going to be able to get on their way and it seemed imperative to them that they begin moving again. Rondalin began thinking about his life and some of the different ways that he had solved problems before. The only thing that he knew that was sure to solve problems was by being joy. It always seemed to work for him, so he figured he would give it a shot here…
He began to cultivate that familiar feeling of joy inside of himself. Rondalin took deep breaths to allow that joy feeling to invigorate his whole body. He used his imagination to see the joy going up and down his arms, through his blood stream, move amidst his nervous system, and stretch to the tips of his toes. A smile emerged on his face and he knew that the feeling of joy had reached all parts of his being.
Rondalin started to walk. He wasn’t sure what direction he was going in, but as he walked, the fog started to clear! Even more odd was that there seemed to be some sort of ‘light’ that was visible all around Rondalin. It was almost as if he was ‘imitating’ what people used to call ‘light bulbs’ in that there was a very recognizable light that was coming from him. As Rondalin continued to walk, the fog continued to clear and the people could see where they were going because Rondalin was out in front of them – leading the way with his joy and his light.
